autoimmune liver disease

Autoimmune liver disease can respond well to nutritional medicine but how long will it take before it improves?

Generally speaking we have found that the time frame depends on how long you have had the liver inflammation and how enthusiastic you are to follow the program to heal your liver. In our medical clinics in Sydney we have found that there is always significant improvement after 4 months if the patient is compliant. Autoimmune liver disease can be caused by several different factors, often working together to make the liver inflammation worse. A blood test should be done to check your genotype for the genes that predispose to gluten intolerance and if these are present, it is vital to avoid gluten.
I recommend the following program -
Selenium 100 mcg daily
Liquid fish oil or flaxseed oil - one tablespoon twice daily just before food
Livatone Plus - 2 capsules daily
Probiotics to improve gut flora
The diet should consist of 40% raw fruits and vegetables as well as some raw juices made freshly
Love your liver and live longer

  1. I always think that it is not so big problem of health bu t when I read this...."Autoimmune liver disease, or autoimmune hepatitis disease, causes your body's immune system to attack your liver cells and your bile duct cells"I just try how to far away from this...!

  2. What are your thoughts on the 'liver flush'.....the olive oil/grapefruit flush that expels stones?

  3. I have AIH, now that I read your article, I want to try your program. How long should I take the probiotics? In may it will be 10 years since I was diagnosed. Thank You.

  4. Thank you for your questions.
The liver flush will not help autoimmune liver disease.
Probiotics need to be taken long term - for years.

  5. I am a 57 year old female with graves disease in remission after drinking radio iodine in 1985. My thyroid died and now I take synthroid daily and seem to be in balance. I have taken glyconutrient supplements for 12 years and was in great shape until I was in a car accident 2002 that fractured C6 which resulted in 1 failed graft then another surgery that was 3 times the surgery the first one was. The surgery didn't relieve the pain from the nerve damage from the first surgery so then I underwent epidural steriodal injections at C-2-C-7. These surgeries and procedures went on for a 5 year period. I tried alot of different medication to get rid of the nerve pain. Used pain med and muscle relaxants and Ibuprofren. The night after the car accident I experienced pain in my upper right side that has never gone away. I went to the Dr and for the last 8 years have had an ultrasound once per year as well as cat scans to investigate the pain with nothing abnormal showing up. In 2008 and 2009 I had frequent episodes of flu symptoms that would last days with nausea vomiting, no fever and malaise but the flu would never manifest. The pain became more frequent and more intense. In the front and back. Finally someone suggested a Hydascan which showed my gallbladder was not functioning. The surgeon said I had had many attacks and the gallbladder had oozed fluid that had created adhesions all over my stomach attaching the gallbladder to my stomach and adhesions on my liver, & kidneys. He removed the adhesions. (this was laperoscopically) 4 weeks after the surgery I developed pain that never left in the liver area again. after an acute attack of pain that felt like an obstruction in the center below my ribs my blood was taken and my liver enzymes were elevated. After many CT scans more ultrasounds, MRI's and blood work that did not show any disease or abnormalities except elevated liver enzymes I underwent a liver biopsy that showed Predominanty lobular inflammation w/single hepatocyte necrosis and apoptosis, no evidence of chronic hep, no sinificant portal fibrosis. The report says the differential for this lobular inflammation included drug/toxin/alcohol induced hepatic damage and some types of viral hepatitis inc EBV infection should be considered.
I have started your liver cleanse diet and will continue the 8 week progam however I seem to be allergic to the flaxseeds and I have been developing symptoms of allergy to nuts for the last year. I get a terrible burning mouth, hoarseness, burning throat and esophagus, painful stomach and brain fog. So I am in a dilemma about what to do for protein on the diet? I am allergic to many antibiotics-swelling,hives, neuralgia, diahreah, vomiting.
I have an alcohol allergy so I don't drink. and am very sensitive to medication so I have never over medicated or abused it. I am perplexed about this liver problem and after reading about the leaky gut I wonder if the car accident could have caused that. My Dr is also perplexed and said he had to consult with the pathologists to put everything together to come up with a diagnosis. he feels it is auto immune hepatitis. Auto immune diseases are prevalent in my family - dermato myositis, sclerdoma, mycosis fungitis lymphoma, polymiositis, sarcodosis, guillain barre. Aunts, uncles, brother. I have Graves and lichen schlerosis. I am really a mess aren't I?
I am the "thyroid body type", by the way. I have appreciated your book because my physicians have given me very little information and this liver diagnostic process has been going on for 6 months now. Do you have any suggestions or input? I'm sorry this is so long!! Dee

  6. Early detection and treatment not only stops much of the damage but also allows the body to repair and reverse the damage already done. Doctors use corticosteroids called prednisone and azathioprine to treat the condition. It suppresses the immune system and slows it down so the minimum effective amount is important to find lest it compromises the system. In close to 70 percent of the cases, the disease goes into remission within three years.

  7. I'm so confused by all this, I think I have some form of liver damage. I had extreme debilitating mood swings for years and was misdiagnosed bipolar, I knew I was not bipolar and that it was hormonal since I had always had female problems. However, getting anyone to listen has been IMPOSSIBLE.

After trying a trial of bioidentical hormone replacement and having it work somewhat, I started having extreme blood pressure and insulin spikes and had to stop taking it. All of the extreme mood swings came back and on top of that I now have multiple chemical sensitivities, and I'm obese as a result of all of the drug cocktails that were prescribed over the years.

I very rarely drink alcohol, but seem to be having a yellowing of the skin after three months of detoxifying my body. Although my moods are better, I'm now suffering from abdominal distention, belching after eating, uncomfortableness in my stomach, sort of slight ache, and am not sure what to do.

I could please use some of your expertise, since I cannot get any help here in the states. I'm ordering your book from your site and the Livotone supplement to start. I have been doing both raw and cooked foods, but now have eliminated the occasional beef that I was eating. I tried dandelion tea but because of an electrolyte imbalance am unsure how to proceed with that one, although it did help a great deal!

I think that the yellowing on my hands, increased liver spots, and THE LIVER ROLE indicate a liver problem, although the doctor that I have been seeing for a year mocked me today and although he took the blood tests, he said that he would send me A LETTER! Which in my opinion means he does not want to see me again, heavy sigh!

What is happening with healthcare in America, I feel like I have just been left to flounder in the Healthcare system without anyone listening.

  8. Dear Denise

It is quite likely that you have an autoimmune disease. Therefore you must be on a gluten free and dairy free diet. The Liver Cleansing Diet is not specific for autoimmune disease. You can eat fish, chicken, eggs, red meat and vegetables predominantly. Don't eat nuts if you are allergic to them, or eat varieties that you can tolerate.

You also need a vitamin D supplement, omega 3 fish oil and selenium, as well as raw vegetable juices.

  9. Hello,
After consulting for decades dozens of GPs and specialists about several health concerns to no avail, I sent my medical family history to a researcher based in Australia. He took one look at it, suggested what to check and only because I insisted in having the relevant tests done, I was found to have celiac genotype DQ8 and positive celiac serology (transglutaminase 90; normal values are below 16)
In March 2009 I had a laparoscopic operation to remove liver cysts that appeared to be growing since I started the celiac sprue.
I always keep a copy of everything done to me and I suggest everyone to do the same. The pathologist report stated that they were benign and composed of bile ducts that were showing signs of mild chronic inflammation.
The usual liver enzyme tests have always been in the normal range. What I will do from now on is monitor the bile duct antibodies. Anyway, this researcher suggested to stay away from gluten, cow's dairy, eggs and yeast as a precaution, on top of anything else that I could be allergic to.
I have several problems as a result of the malabsorption of vitamins and minerals caused by the toxic food fractions. One of them is osteoporosis (again, detected only because I insisted in having a bone densitometry) and the doctors prescribed a drug called Fosamax. The first dose was the only one I had as I developed symptoms of liver dysfunction. I've replaced it with Bone Build from Dr Cabot.
We are so fortunate to have doctors like Sandra Cabot, Chris Reading and George Samra, all of them genuinely committed to the wellbeing of their patients.
One thing that I've learned and want to share with you is that we need to assume the responsibility for our own health, and that includes searching for the answers beyond the doctors and specialists at hand.
Wishing all of you a successful journey back to full health!
    Rachel, NZ

  10. Dear Rachel

Thank you so much for your comments. Good on you for being so proactive and getting to the bottom of your health problems.
Nearly all coeliacs are vitamin D deficient, and that is the biggest cause of osteoporosis. Please take a vitamin D supplement and have a blood test to make sure you are absorbing it adequately. On a blood test your vitamin D level should be above 100nmol/L.

  11. I agree that a person should take responsibility for their own health and investigate alternatives. I have been doing this for my husband who has Hep C, he had not been to the liver doctor for awhile and when he did go, the doctor stated your liver has probably gotten worse not better. This was not true becaue he was taken supplements, like milk thistle, chorella, vitamin D, L-arginine and others. When the biospy and blood test were done, the doctor just did not know what to say, it was normal. The doctor also told him, there is nothing else he could have done, but take the inteferon to get better.

  14. Hi
My step son has been diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. I would apprecaite any comments from Dr Cabot if the liver cleansing diet would assist him and if she could suggest some thoughts about what might be of assistance with the inflammation and scarring of the liver bile ducts.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thank you for your comments.

Primary biliary cirrhosis and sclerosing cholangitis are both autoimmune liver diseases, therefore the above recommendations are usually very effective.

A gluten and dairy free diet is essential. The Liver Cleansing Diet is not a gluten free diet, but it can be modified to make it gluten free.

  17. Brenda Blue Springs, MOJune 18, 2010 1:20 PM

I have been diagnosed with PSC and it looks as though a gluten free diet is the way to go. My only problem is I lost my colin to Ulcerative Colitis and now have a J-Pouch. There are a lot of things I can't eat yet. I am only 4 months into the J=Pouch. Raw vegetables bother me, milk, spicey foods and sweet of course. I stick to bread and white grains and cooked vegetables, chicken and a little beef mainly. Little to no fruits because of the acid. If I eliminate the breads it doesn't leave me much. Any suggestions. I am going to start probiotics this week and I need to get back on my Bio Identical hormones but not sure if I should even take them. Just looking for a little information I am so new at trying to get this pouch to work correctly. I know over time it will get better but now it's very difficult some days.
    Thanks so much!

  18. Thank you for your comments Cynthia.
A liver ultrasound can detect enlargement of the liver and some degree of inflammation. A blood test is more specific for detecting autoimmune liver disease. A liver biopsy may be required.
The book The Ultimate Detox contains a lot of information about autoimmune disease, a gluten and dairy free diet.

    Dear Brenda Blue Springs,
You definitely need a gluten free diet.
Please keep eating cooked vegetables, rice, gluten free pasta and protein foods such as chicken, red meat, eggs and fish. You can eat gluten free bread. Please make sure you avoid all milk and every food that contains milk.

  19. Dear Margaret
I have just been diagnosed with Primary Billary Cirrhosis, but have tested negative for gluten intolerance and coeliacs disease. I'm starting Ursofalk (as soon as I wean my 8-month-old baby), but also want to make sure my diet and supplementation is best for my health. A naturopath suggested a live blood analysis to test for any viruses that may be causing the autoimmune response - do you believe this to be useful? Also, can you advise a diet & supplementation - or suggest who I should consult.

    thanks and regards, Donna

  20. Hi Margaret,

Last year, my employee had a double mastectomy to remove several benign tumours. She was 27 and eventhough the surgery was successful, stress got the better of her and triggered off something else - myasthenia gravis.

She suffered from droopy eyelids, difficulty in breathing/swallowing and a dramatic weight loss. Having been on Mestinon for several months now, she was suffering from dizziness more often for the past few days. I read that MG is an autoimmune disease so I decided to get her on the LCD and made her a juice consisting of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, parsley, garlic and apple. Eventhough she has felt some improvement, I hope I'm heading towards the right direction because I don't believe that taking stronger medication in the future will help her treat this disease.

Could you please advise what other supplements are beneficial for her?

Thanks so much. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Beverly

  21. Greetings!

I'm on the Liver Cleansing Diet for 2 weeks. It's hard to fight the cravings. For nearly 3 months I've been taking Godex 3 times a day. Will I stop taking my medicine, and is taking Godex causes a rise of liver enzymes?

Last May, I was diagnosed of Fatty Liver, so I was prescribed to take Godex and Simvastatin. After a month, my blood test rose from 81 U/L to 271 U/L and my SGOT which was previously normal rose to 75 U/L. My intake of simvastatin was immediately stopped due to suspected sensitivity which caused a dramatic liver enzyme elevation.

I'm hoping for a decrease in the level of my liver enzymes following the LCD. What bothers me is the Godex.

    Please advice!

    Paul

  22. A really good liver cleanser is the Ayurvedic herb Phyllanthus amarus. It has been used in India for many centuries. It is usually paired with the a liver tonic called Picrorrhiza kurroa ---> this herb is believed to also address inflammation (reduces Pitta imbalances). If you are looking for a decent source, try this company. The products are manufactured in USA in FDA inspected facilities:

By the way the above page also has a link on how to do a seasonal liver cleanse.

  23. I've studied autoimmunity since I was diagnosed with AIH and cirrhosis almost 4 years ago at the age of 21. The autoimmunity is caused by triggers. Triggers can be different for everyone and there will be more than one. Fix the autoimmunity and then the cirrhosis will follow. GAPS diet is excellent for treating autoimmunity. Other triggers could be root canals, mercury toxicity, food allergies, bacterial infections... just to name a few. Check out my blog!

  24. Autoimmune hepatitis is a clinical and laboratory diagnosis that indicates one's immune system is inappropriately attacking liver cells, including bile duct cells. The immune system's lack of control can result in liver destruction, cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver transplantation.

  25. Hello - I was wondering if you could tell me if PSC can be helped by diet? My husband was diagnoised with PSC about 5 years ago and suffers from every symptom possible. Abdominal pain, weight loss, fatique, etc etc. A friend of mine suggested the GAPS diet to me and I was wondering what you thought. He is currently on the transplant list and I am desperate to find a way to help him. The daily pain he suffers with has basically stopped him from living his life and has affected our whole family. Please advise.... Thank you! ~Samantha

  26. You have a nice article here. Liver is really one of the most important internal organ that we had. But if we are not taking good care of it then our chances is we can get diseases like hepatitis or worst liver cirrhosis.

And nonetheless, thank you for the program that you are presenting here. I can suggest this one to a friend of mine whose suffering from such disease.

  28. What do you think of artichokes? Not just as an herbal extract, but also as a vegetable, I think artichokes are great for liver health. If you don't like to cook artichokes, you could always find some good dip that has artichokes in it. Eat it as a snack with tortilla chips (low fat and gluten-free).

I also think pro-biotics are great for a healthy digestive system.
