Hi it's Dr Cabot here ! (Tuesday 16th February 2010) and I am in Phoenix with my naturopath Christine Ki and we were checking the comments to our blog on thyroid problems.
I would like to thank everyone who has made comments on our blogs; you all sound like great people and it makes us feel worthwhile that our knowledge can help you so much.
I would like to add a few things about thyroid disease. In pre-menopausal women I have found that both over active and under active thyroid conditions are often associated with deficiency (inadequate production) of progesterone. The thyroid condition can be helped by the use of progesterone cream (Fem Pro cream). If the thyroid condition is auto-immune, the use of a selenium supplement is vitally important, as it treats the cause of the problem - namely elevated auto-antibodies. Liquid fish oil acts as a natural anti-inflammatory in cases of auto-immune thyroid disease - I suggest one to two tablespoons daily, just before food.
Overactive thyroid is often caused by stress and trying to fit too much into your life - if so, get more rest and relaxation and take a good magnesium supplement - like MAGNESIUM COMPLETE - I call magnesium, The Great Relaxer!
Stay well and believe in yourself

Hello Dr Sandra Cabot,
ReplyDeleteI have been doing the LCD for 6 weeks (I'm in the second week of the middle four weeks) and I started to developed coated tongue which I didn't have as a symptom initially (as explained in the LCD book - page 26).
Is this normal or am I doing something incorrect with the diet?
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Lucre
A well functioning thyroid is essential for healthy metabolism, circulation and cholesterol levels. Thyroid disease is not always as easy to diagnose and treat as the experts believe.I like your blog because it is informative and simple to understand!

My specialist told me thryoid (grave disease) causes stress not caused by?? Is fish oil in capsule form ok, just as good as liquid form?
ReplyDeleteI have just been diagnosed with Graves Disease. I am 106kg and whilst I have never had problems loosing weight once I focused on it, I always regain it. Ironically weight loss is the only symptom I didnt get. I actually thought I was starting menopause, and it was the symptoms that made me ask for a blood test. I have heart palpatations - thought I was going to have a heart attack after gentle exercise, always very hot temperature, swollen lower legs, hot soles of feet, depression, anxiety, exhaustion - the list goes on. I have been on medication for 2 days but I am looking at my diet too. My doctor really didnt talk too much to me about diet! I just bought a Champion juicer. I dont know where to start. I have bought your Thyroid book but it seems to mainly refer to under active thyroid for diet. Do I stay away from seaweed, soy, tofu? I am feeling a bit anxious about it all. Any advice would be great.
ReplyDeleteNice informative post! Another symptom is: do you feel tenderness in your neck or have problems wearing a turtleneck? That's a CLEAR SIGN you have a thyroid condition. I've had that problem since 2001 and my blood work didn't show anything wrong but my ENT said "Yes you do have a thyroid problem." Endocrinologist only looked at bloodwork and said "Nothing's wrong with you." The bloodwork showed it EIGHT YEARS LATER and damage was done. Trust your instincts!

I suffer Graves disease also, I was diagnosed 4 years ago.
ReplyDeleteDue to the fact that my doctor does not concern himself with diet and is only interested in blood test results, I have been looking at trying the LCD to see if it helps at all.
I have been frustrated that only hypothyroidism seems to be mentioned.
Graves sufferers should avoid iodine, soy and a few other things that hashimoto sufferers can have so it leaves me in limbo as to what I should be having.
How would I go with the LCD, is there anything I should avoid or add?
I have hyperthyroidism and know for certain there is a progesterone deficiency which causes an extreme mood imbalance for me. Since I think I now have liver damage, I'm thinking there is an autoimmune component involved. Of course, I haven't found anyone who understands the connection between female hormones and the thyroid.
ReplyDeleteDear do66
ReplyDeleteHaving Graves' disease makes a person feel stressed because their heart rate increases and they perspire more, but a stressful life event can trigger the autoimmune process that causes Graves' disease in the body.
Most liquid fish oil products are far more concentrated than fish oil in capsules. With some capsules you'd need to take around 12 capsules a day to get a therapeutic dose.

Dear Jenny
ReplyDeleteOur book Your Thyroid Problems Solved contains a diet to follow which is more specific for thyroid disease than the Liver Cleansing Diet.
Because Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease, we recommend a gluten and dairy free diet. Our thyroid book also contains a bowel detox, which is therapeutic for all autoimmune disease.
Best wishes

ReplyDeleteMy doctor gave me a nice diet it is the only thing that had help me lately because pills make that I felt worst and sometimes I gain more weight with them.
ReplyDeleteHi, thank for sharing Dr, I just had a question the selenium can be purchase pure? on a pharmacy or I need a prescription and how many spoonful have to take on a day, If it is pure ?
ReplyDeleteThank you.
So do you take magnesium supplements or try to get the same from the available foods?I like to take it from peanuts and beans...what say?
ReplyDeleteI was having a goiter last year and my thyroid hormone has been monitor since then. Just last month, my blood test came back with zero reading on T3. My GP prescribe me with thyroxine and told me I am at the borderline and it is fine if I don't take it.
ReplyDeleteI found out I was diagnosed with clinical Hypothyroidism after reading the blood test result when I got home. After browsing on the net, I was frustrated that my GP didn't explain what really happen and show no concern.
Would appreciate if Dr. Sandra Cabot could tell me what is that mean by zero T3, what natural remedies can I take? If I don't take thyroxine, will I die?
